Lifting of monopiles by Mammoet

For the lifting of monopiles in the port of Zeebrugge (BE) was Mammoet using two heavy crawler cranes. This Terex CC 2800-1 was rented of Aertssen from Stabroek (BE).

Here was the crane fitted with a 48 meter main boom and a 30 meter long superlift boom. The crane was busy here to prepare the superlift counterweight.

The second crane was hired of PVE from Oosterhout (NL). It is a Liebherr LR 1750 that was used here with the ballast wagon.

This Liebherr LR 1750 was later during this project sold to Mammoet and was subsequently painted in the famous colours.

The LR 1750 was fitted with a 56 meter main boom and 31.5 meter long superlift boom.

On the wagon is 241 tonnes of counterweight stacked, eigthteen slabs with each a 12 tonnes mass and two slabs with a 12.5 tonne mass. The ballast wagon can be used on a counter radius between 13 to 20 meters.

Both cranes are now ready for the lifting. We are waiting for the boat to arrive from Rostock (DE).

The boat has brought two large monopiles (foundation piles for offshore wind turbines) and the cranes will be used to unload the ship. The monopiles will be temporarily stored between the crawler cranes. The cranes are lifting now the first monopile from the ship, the superlift counterweight of the CC 2800-1 is floating here.

The radius of the CC 2800-1 becomes smaller, the superlift counterweight is already set back on the ground.

Then are both cranes crawling backwards to deliver the monopile into the storage area. The monopile weights around 400 tonnes.

The advantage of the ballast wagon is that it remains attached to the cranes, also when the superlift counterweight isn't required during lifting or is relocating itself. Here is the ballast wagon floating in the air.

The monopile will be stored in the sand.

Quickly is continued to pick up the second monopile from the ship. The superlift counterweight is already attached to the Terex CC 2800-1.

This monopile is heavier compared to the previos one and weights around 420 tonnes. The Terex CC 2800-1 has the 600-tonne hook here reeved at 26 part lines. The LR 1750 is using a 400-tonne hook, reeved at 28 part lines.

After the superlift counterweight of the CC 2800-1 is detached again is the monopile slewed between the two cranes.

It always is a pleasure to see a ballast wagon in action. Very sharp lifting works done by Mammoet!
